Torre d'Orti is the Valpolicella project of the Piona family, already well known for Cavalchina in Custoza, one of the benchmark names for Bianco di Custoza. The vineyards are not in the Classico zone but in eastern Valpolicella, where the soils and wide day-night temperature swings give fresher, tauter wines.
It is an Amarone from the traditional Valpolicella grapes, mainly Corvina and Corvinone with Rondinella and a little Oseleta, dried in the classic way and vinified with precision. Production is small and the family's stated style is clear: less opulence, more freshness and ability to age.
More than ten years after the harvest, the 2013 is a mature Amarone, with cherries in spirit, dried plum, cocoa, tobacco and spice, supported by good acidity that balances the substantial alcohol. With beef braised in Amarone, game, aged cheeses such as Monte Veronese d'allevo, or on its own.
At a glance: Corvina and Corvinone 75%, Rondinella 15%, Oseleta 10% · 16.5% ABV · 0.75 l · Torre d'Orti, Valpolicella
