Ca' dei Frati is the leading name in Lugana, on the southern shore of Lake Garda, owned by the Dal Cero family. Its roots, though, lie in the Veneto: the family moved to the lake in 1939 from Montecchia di Crosara. Hence the idea of an Amarone dedicated to Pietro Dal Cero, son of founder Felice and the man who steered the estate towards wine.
The vineyard, planted in 2002, lies at Marcellise in eastern Valpolicella, at about 350 metres facing south on deep marl with limestone outcrops. After drying, the wine ages about two years in barrique, then a year in steel and a long time in bottle.
The 2018 is a rich, modern Amarone: black cherry, chocolate, sweet spice, tobacco and balsamic notes, with freshness that lightens the structure. Offered in its original wooden case, it also makes an excellent gift. With braised meats, game and aged cheeses.
