Anfiteatro 2012 – Vecchie Terre di Montefili

Vecchie Terre di Montefili is a small estate at Panzano in Chianti Classico, founded in 1975 by the Acuti family and American-owned since 2015. Anfiteatro is its signature wine: born as a Chianti Classico Riserva in 1981, it later became one of Tuscany's first pure Sangioveses made outside the rules. The name comes from the vineyard itself, planted in an amphitheatre shape in 1975.

The vines sit between 480 and 540 metres on pietraforte, alberese and schistous clays: altitude slows ripening and brings freshness and longevity. The wine ages in medium and large oak, with no interest in oaky flavours.

2012, a warm vintage, produced a generous Sangiovese that, more than ten years on, shows full development: ripe cherry, dried violet, tobacco, leather and earthy notes. A vintage from the Acuti era, well worth seeking out. With roasts, game and aged pecorino.
