Podere Poggio Scalette sits on the Ruffoli hill above Greve in Chianti. It was founded in the early 1990s by Vittorio Fiore, one of the winemakers who shaped modern Tuscan wine, and is now run by his son Jurij. Il Carbonaione is its signature wine: a pure Sangiovese bottled as IGT Alta Valle della Greve, among the most sought-after reds of the area.
It comes from vines planted in the years after the First World War, an old biotype known as Sangiovese di Lamole, at 350 to 550 metres on very stony soils. It ferments in steel and matures in 350-litre tonneaux, then rests in bottle.
2014 was a cool, rainy vintage that gave leaner, more delicate Sangiovese. At ten years old the wine shows brandied cherry, dried violet, leather and undergrowth, with acidity still lively. With roasts, game and aged cheeses.
