Maria Pia Castelli is a small estate at Monte Urano, in the hills of the Fermo area looking out over the Adriatic. It was founded in 1998 by Erasmo Castelli, who took on an existing vineyard; after his death his daughter Maria Pia carried on with her husband Enrico Bartoletti, and dedicated this red to her father, who did not live to see it released.
It is a pure Montepulciano from organic farming and very low yields. It ferments spontaneously in oak vats with a long maceration, matures for about two years in barriques and then rests for several years in bottle before release: a degree of patience rarely seen in the Marche.
The 2017 shows a dense colour and aromas of ripe black fruit, chocolate, leather and tobacco, over firm tannins polished by the long ageing. A deep, artisanal red for braised meats, game, red meat roasts and aged cheeses.
