FSM stands for Federico Secondo Matta: it is the pure Merlot of Castello Vicchiomaggio, the medieval castle in the hills of Greve in Chianti owned by the Matta family. In an area dominated by Sangiovese, this is the bottle with which the estate shows how much Merlot can give in the heart of Chianti Classico.
The vineyard lies at about 260 metres on clay soils rich in galestro and alberese. After a long maceration in steel, malolactic fermentation takes place in wood and the wine matures for 16 months in French barriques, plus a year in bottle before release. Yields are very low.
2015 was a great Tuscan vintage, warm and even, producing rich, generous wines. In the glass ripe black fruit, plum, cocoa, sweet spice and soft, enveloping tannins; it is now starting to show its first evolved notes. With beef fillet, game and aged cheeses.
