Founded in 1893, Cantina Terlano is one of Alto Adige's benchmark cooperatives, best known for extraordinarily long-lived whites. Lagrein, though, is the native red of the Bolzano area, and Gries, now a district of the city, is its historic home.
The vineyards lie on the flat at about 250 metres, on light sandy soils derived from porphyry, in one of the warmest basins of the region. After fermentation in steel and malolactic, the wine matures for about a year, half in large casks and half in barriques, some of them new.
The 2017 now has some bottle age and shows a dark, velvety Lagrein: blackberry, blueberry, violet, cocoa, a touch of spice and herbs, with soft tannins and good freshness. A characterful mountain red at a fair price. With red meats, goulash, speck, game and alpine cheeses.
At a glance: Lagrein 100% · 13.5% ABV · 0.75 l · Cantina Terlano, Bolzano-Gries
