Gries Lagrein Riserva 2021 – Cantina Terlano

Cantina Terlano is one of Italy's most respected co-operatives, best known for its long-lived whites. Its benchmark red, though, is this Lagrein Riserva from Gries, the Bolzano district that has always been the historic home of the grape, a warm, sheltered basin where Lagrein ripens reliably.

The vineyards, at around 250 metres, grow on light, sandy alluvial soils rich in volcanic quartz porphyry. After fermentation in stainless steel, malolactic takes place in wood; ageing lasts about a year, half in large casks and half in barriques, partly new, for oak that is present but well judged.

The 2021 is deep and dark in colour, with aromas of dark berries, violet and cocoa and a hint of spice. The palate is full yet smooth, with velvety tannins and good freshness. Excellent with braised meat, game, speck, canederli and aged mountain cheeses.
