Lafoa Cabernet Sauvignon 2005 – Colterenzio

Lafóa Cabernet Sauvignon is the flagship red of Colterenzio, the co-operative winery at Cornaiano, in the Oltradige above Bolzano. It grew out of the vision of Luis Raifer, the winery's president, who after a trip to California decided to bet on low yields and great wines: in the Lafóa vineyard he replaced Schiava with Cabernet, and the first vintage was released in 1989.

The vineyard crowns the Cornaiano hill, sunny and well ventilated, ideal conditions for ripening a late variety like Cabernet in an Alpine climate. The wine ages in small oak and shows a fresher, more taut profile than the Cabernets of the Tuscan coast.

The 2005 is now an evolved wine with nearly twenty years in bottle: cassis and blackberry are joined by tobacco, leather, graphite and dried herbs, over integrated tannins and lovely freshness. Open with care for game, braised meat or long-aged cheeses.
