Le Pergole Torte is the signature wine of Montevertine, in Radda in Chianti, and one of Tuscany's most important pure Sangioveses. Sergio Manetti first made it in 1977, when Chianti rules still required other grapes to be added; he chose to leave the appellation rather than compromise. Today the estate is run by his son Martino.
Every vintage has a different label featuring a woman's portrait drawn by Alberto Manfredi: a tradition that makes the bottles recognisable at a glance.
The style is classic and unadorned: hillside Sangiovese, fresh, with fine tannins and great ageing potential. In the glass: cherry, violet, orange, spice and earth. Pair with red meat, roasts and Tuscan dishes.
