Le Pergole Torte is the wine that proved how great Sangiovese can be on its own. Sergio Manetti first made it in 1977 at Montevertine, in Radda in Chianti: it was the area's first pure Sangiovese, at a time when Chianti rules still required white grapes. Today the estate is run by his son Martino, and the labels painted for decades by Alberto Manfredi have become iconic.
The grapes come from the estate's historic vineyards at Radda and ferment in concrete tanks with a maceration of around twenty-five days. The wine then matures for twelve months in Allier barriques and twelve in Slavonian oak casks, before a few months in bottle.
2019, a balanced, classic vintage, gave a Pergole Torte of great finesse: cherry, violet, blood orange, spice and dense, silky tannins, with Radda's typical savoury streak. Already enjoyable, but with a long future ahead. With roasts, game, bistecca alla fiorentina and aged cheeses.
At a glance: Sangiovese 100% · 13.5% ABV · 0.75 l · Montevertine, Radda in Chianti
