Antonelli San Marco is one of the benchmark estates of Montefalco. The property, owned for centuries by the Bishop of Spoleto, was bought in 1883 by Spoleto lawyer Francesco Antonelli; since 1986 it has been run by Filippo Antonelli, who has made the winery a cornerstone of classic, rigorous Sagrantino. The estate's first dry Sagrantino was the 1981.
The organically farmed grapes come from hillside vineyards between 300 and 400 metres, facing south and south-west. After a long maceration of 25 to 40 days, the wine ages for at least 18 months in large oak casks, rests in concrete tanks and is bottled unfiltered. A traditional approach that aims for elegance rather than showy power.
The 2018 offers blackberry, plum, dark spice, a balsamic touch and the grape's typical tannic weave, dense but well integrated. Already enjoyable, it has many years of development ahead. With braised meats, game, roast red meats and aged cheeses.
