Scacciadiavoli is one of the historic wineries of Montefalco. The name, literally "devil banisher", recalls an exorcism that tradition places here in the 17th century; in the mid-1800s Prince Ugo Boncompagni Ludovisi built the winery, still in use today. Since the last century the estate has belonged to the Pambuffetti family, now in its fourth generation.
The vineyards lie at around 275 metres, facing south and south-west, on mixed limestone, clay and sand. The Sagrantino ferments and macerates for three to four weeks in large French oak vats, then ages for about 18 months in oak casks and vats and rests in bottle before release.
2018, a less extreme vintage than the ones before it, produced a more relaxed, harmonious Sagrantino: ripe black fruit, spice, cocoa and powerful yet already well-integrated tannins. Drink now or keep for many years, with braised meats, game, roast red meats and aged cheeses.
At a glance: Sagrantino 100% · 15% ABV · 0.75 l · Scacciadiavoli, Montefalco (Umbria)
