Giampaolo Tabarrini is one of Montefalco's most individual growers: rather than one Sagrantino he makes three single-vineyard versions, to show how the soils differ. Campo alla Cerqua ("cerqua" is local dialect for oak) is the finest and most mineral of the three, with around 2,000 bottles produced.
The vineyard, planted in 1997, lies at about 400 metres facing south-east, on silty clay full of river pebbles, looser than the soils of Grimaldesco and Macchie. The wine macerates on its skins for over a month and ages at least 36 months in French oak, then a year in bottle.
The 2012 is now more than ten years old: Sagrantino's imposing tannins have relaxed, making room for ripe black fruit, spice, tobacco, leather and tertiary notes. With lamb, game, black truffle and aged cheeses.
At a glance: Sagrantino 100% · 14.5% ABV · 0.75 l · Tabarrini, Montefalco (PG)
