Ornellaia 2001 – Tenuta dell'Ornellaia

Ornellaia is, together with Sassicaia, the wine that made Bolgheri famous worldwide. The estate was founded by Lodovico Antinori in the early 1980s, with 1985 as its first vintage, and today belongs to the Frescobaldi family. The 2001 predates the Vendemmia d'Artista project with its artist labels.

In 2001 the blend was clearly led by Cabernet Sauvignon, with Merlot and a small share of Cabernet Franc. The wine spent eighteen months in French oak barriques and a year in bottle before release.

The vintage had an even summer and a harvest with warm days and cool nights, ideal conditions for full ripening. At twenty-five years old the wine is fully evolved: cassis and blackberry jam, cedar, tobacco, leather, graphite and dried herbs, with tannins now polished. A great historic Bolgheri vintage, to be opened with care and served with game, roasts or aged cheeses.
