Pecchia is the most ambitious Sangiovese from Gagliole, a small Chianti Classico estate with vineyards between Castellina and Panzano. The name is an old Tuscan word for bee, and the wine is a pure Sangiovese from Panzano grapes, grown in the Valletta vineyards at around 500 metres on the edge of the famous Conca d'Oro.
What sets it apart is whole-barrel vinification: the destemmed, sorted grapes ferment directly in barriques, which are rotated every day. The wine then stays in barrique for at least 18 months and rests at least a year in bottle. Only a very small number of bottles is made. The soils are typical of the area, with limestone and sandstone (the local pietraforte).
2016 is one of the great recent Chianti Classico vintages: balance, intact fruit and lively acidity. In the glass cherry, violet, spice and well-integrated oak, with dense, long tannins. With Florentine steak, game and aged pecorino.
