J. Hofstätter is one of the historic wineries of Tramin, run by the Foradori family, and among the first to believe in Pinot Noir in Alto Adige. Its name is linked above all to the Mazzon (Mazon) plateau above Neumarkt/Egna, regarded as Italy's finest cru for the variety.
Mazzon lies on the cooler eastern side of the Bassa Atesina, between 350 and 460 metres, with exposures that temper the heat of the valley and clay soils with limestone gravel. Here Pinot Noir gains depth and concentration without losing finesse; the Riserva ages in oak before further bottle maturation.
The 2020 is ruby-garnet, with strawberry, sour cherry, forest floor and fine spice; the palate is warm, round and harmonious. The magnum format favours slow evolution and makes it ideal for convivial occasions. With duck, guinea fowl, mushroom dishes and roast white meats.
At a glance: Pinot Noir 100% · 13.5% ABV · 1.5 l (magnum) · Hofstätter, Mazzon (Alto Adige)
