Michele Perillo is a small grower at Castelfranci, in upper Irpinia, who tends vineyards planted by his grandfather. After years as a factory worker he chose to devote himself full-time to wine with his wife Annamaria, and since 1999 he has bottled his own Taurasi, which soon became a benchmark for those looking for the most classic, austere Aglianico.
The vineyards lie at 480 to 500 metres, some of them very old and even ungrafted, on soils that alternate clay, tuff and volcanic sand. The wine ferments and ages in steel and wood, but its real distinction is time: Perillo releases his Taurasi only around ten years after the harvest.
The 2011 Riserva therefore arrives already evolved: ripe black fruit, sour cherry, tobacco, leather, spice and earthy notes, with Aglianico's powerful tannins now integrated and fine freshness. A Taurasi of great structure, to serve with lamb, game, braised meats and aged cheeses.
