Terra di Lavoro is the only wine made by Galardi, a small family estate at San Carlo di Sessa Aurunca, on the slopes of the extinct Roccamonfina volcano in northern Caserta province. The name is the historic name of this part of Campania. Guided from the start by oenologist Riccardo Cotarella, it is one of the reds that in the 1990s proved the South could make wines to rival the greats of Bordeaux and Tuscany.
It is made from Aglianico with a share of Piedirosso, on volcanic soils a few kilometres from the Gulf of Gaeta. After a long maceration on the skins it ages for about a year in French oak barriques, then in bottle.
With twenty years behind it, the 2005 is a mature wine: black fruit preserves, spice, graphite, tobacco and forest floor, with polished tannins and the savouriness typical of volcanic soils. A collector's bottle, to pair with game, lamb and aged cheeses.
