Vignamaggio is one of the historic estates of Chianti Classico, at Greve in Chianti: a Renaissance villa with fifteenth-century cellars and a winemaking tradition spanning more than six hundred years. Alongside Sangiovese, the estate has long believed in Cabernet Franc, which finds a particularly refined expression on the Greve hills.
The grapes, from organically farmed vineyards, are hand-picked and fermented in stainless steel with about eighteen days of maceration. The wine then matures in French oak barriques for 18 to 24 months, followed by several months in bottle before release.
Now ten years old, the 2015, a warm and generous vintage, has begun to develop tertiary notes: black fruit is joined by tobacco, spice, leather and the grape's typical herbal touch, while the tannins have softened. Pair with game, roasts and aged cheeses.
