Ferro 2013 – Collazzi

Collazzi is the Marchi family's estate in the hills south of Florence, set around a splendid sixteenth-century villa. Ferro is the house's most unusual wine: a pure Petit Verdot, a Bordeaux variety rarely bottled on its own, named after the vineyard it comes from.

The vineyard, facing Florence, sits in a natural amphitheatre with a south-west exposure, on clay-limestone soils with some sand: warm, dry conditions that allow Petit Verdot, a late ripener, to reach full maturity. The grapes are picked by hand and the wine is aged for about twenty-four months in French oak barriques.

2013, a cooler-than-average year in Tuscany, gave a classically styled Petit Verdot that has now entered its mature phase: still deep in colour, with morello cherry, black fruit, pepper and balsamic notes, plus the first tertiary hints of leather and forest floor. With braised meats, game, roasts and aged cheeses.
