Piantonaia 2020 – Podere Poggio Scalette

Podere Poggio Scalette is the estate founded in 1991 by winemaker Vittorio Fiore and his wife Adriana on the Ruffoli hill above Greve in Chianti, now run by their son Jurij. The house's best-known wine is Carbonaione, a Sangiovese from old vines; Piantonaia, made since 1999, is its pure Merlot.

The vineyard lies at about 430 metres, in the upper part of Ruffoli, facing west-south-west on stony, loose soils. After fermentation in steel the wine ages for about eighteen months in new French oak barriques, then rests in bottle.

2020 was a balanced vintage in Tuscany, and Ruffoli's altitude gives the Merlot a welcome freshness: plum, black cherry, cocoa, spice and a balsamic note, with silky tannins. A high-altitude Chianti Merlot that bears comparison with the more famous ones from the coast; with fillet steak, duck or aged cheeses.
