Solaia is, with Tignanello, the flagship of the modern Tuscan renaissance led by Antinori. It comes from the vineyard of the same name on the Tignanello estate in Chianti Classico, named for its full exposure to the sun. The first vintage was 1978; from 1980 Sangiovese joined the Cabernet, setting the style we know today.
The vineyard sits on stony limestone soils of alberese and galestro. The grapes are vinified by parcel and the wine matures in new French oak barriques for about a year and a half, followed by further ageing in bottle.
2012 was a hot, dry vintage that produced a rich, concentrated Solaia. Today it is in a lovely phase: blackcurrant, blackberry, spice, tobacco, graphite and balsamic notes, with ripe tannins and good freshness. One of Italy's great Bordeaux-style reds, alongside Sassicaia and Ornellaia. With beef fillet, game and aged cheeses.
