Pian delle Vigne is the Marchesi Antinori estate in Montalcino, acquired in 1995: that vintage was also the first Brunello under this name. The name comes from the locality, home to a characteristic nineteenth-century railway station, about six kilometres south-west of the town.
The vineyards face mainly south-west, on clay-limestone soils rich in fine gravel. The philosophy is one of large casks: after fermentation in steel the Brunello ages for two years in 30 to 80-hectolitre oak casks, which respect Sangiovese's fruit, and then rests in bottle.
2016 is one of Montalcino's finest vintages in decades, producing balanced, fresh and very long-lived wines. In the glass, cherry, red berries, spice, leather and balsamic notes, with dense, refined tannins. With bistecca alla fiorentina, roasts, wild boar and aged pecorino.
