Pian delle Vigne is the Antinori estate in Montalcino, about six kilometres south-west of the town. Vignaferrovia is its single-vineyard Riserva, named after a charming 19th-century railway station that still stands a short distance from the vines. The first vintage was 2004 and it is made only in the best years.
The plot is small, about four hectares, on stony calcareous clay that naturally limits the vigour of the vines. The wine ferments in steel and ages for over two years in casks of various sizes, from 5 to 30 hectolitres, followed by a long spell in bottle.
2015, a warm and much-celebrated vintage in Montalcino, produced a rich, generous Riserva: ripe cherry, plum, sweet spice, tobacco and balsamic notes, with dense tannins and a long finish. A Brunello of great structure, for red meat, game and aged cheeses, with many years of evolution ahead.
