Sperss is the Serralunga d'Alba Nebbiolo of Angelo Gaja, the producer who took the Langhe to markets all over the world. Gaja bought the vineyard in 1988, marking the family's return to the Barolo area; the name means "nostalgia" in Piedmontese dialect. From 1996 to 2012 Gaja chose to step outside the DOCG, bottling Sperss as Langhe DOC with a small proportion of Barbera.
Serralunga is the part of Barolo that gives the most structured, long-lived wines, on compact calcareous soils. The wine matures in wood, first in barriques and then in large casks, in the style Gaja introduced to the Langhe.
1999 is regarded as a classic, very long-lived vintage in Piedmont. More than twenty-five years after harvest it is an evolved wine: dried rose, sour cherry, tobacco, leather, truffle and spice, with tannins still present but now polished. A collector's bottle among the great Nebbiolos of Serralunga. With braised meats, game and white truffle dishes.
