Terra di Lavoro is one of Southern Italy's great reds, started almost as a hobby in the early 1990s by two pairs of cousins, including Baron Roberto Selvaggi, on the slopes of the extinct Roccamonfina volcano at Sessa Aurunca in northern Campania. The first vintage was 1994, just a few hundred bottles; Riccardo Cotarella has been the winemaker from the start. The name is the historic one of the province of Caserta.
The vineyards, around ten hectares at 400 to 500 metres, overlook the Gulf of Gaeta on volcanic soils. The wine is a blend of Aglianico and Piedirosso and ages 12 months in new French oak barriques. Bottles are hand-sealed with wax and numbered.
2017, a hot and dry vintage, produced a rich, ripe Terra di Lavoro: blackberry, plum, spice, graphite and smoky notes, with powerful yet polished tannins. A Campanian red that stands among Italy's great wines. With lamb, game and aged cheeses.
At a glance: Aglianico 80%, Piedirosso 20% · 13.5% ABV · 0.75 l · Galardi, Sessa Aurunca (CE)
