50&50 was born in 1988 from a challenge between friends: over dinner, Ettore Falvo of Avignonesi in Montepulciano and Raffaele Rossetti of Capannelle in Gaiole in Chianti decided to blend their wines. The result surprised them so much that they bottled it; the name, meant to be temporary, simply described the proportions of the blend, and it stuck.
To this day the wine brings together Avignonesi's Merlot and Capannelle's Sangiovese in equal parts. The two components are vinified separately in their own cellars and then blended, with oak ageing to marry their characters.
2018, a cooler and more even vintage than the previous ones, produced an elegant, balanced wine: cherry and plum, herbs, cocoa and sweet spice, with Sangiovese adding freshness and Merlot softness. One of the historic Super Tuscans, excellent with grilled red meat, roasts and medium-aged cheeses.
At a glance: Merlot 50%, Sangiovese 50% · 13.5% ABV · 0.75 l · Avignonesi Capannelle, Tuscany
