Speri is one of the historic families of Valpolicella Classica, based at Pedemonte for generations and still entirely family-run. Its Amarone comes from the Monte Sant'Urbano vineyard at Fumane, between 280 and 350 metres, a well-exposed hillside with old vines.
Corvina and Corvinone, with Rondinella and a little Molinara, are dried for around a hundred days before pressing. The wine then matures for two years in French oak tonneaux, eighteen months in large Slavonian oak casks and a year in bottle: a classic style that aims for balance rather than sweetness.
2017, a warm vintage, produced a full, harmonious Amarone: dried fruit, cherries in spirit, sweet spice, cocoa and a long, dry finish. With braised meats, game, red meat roasts and aged cheeses, or on its own after dinner.
