2021 was the last harvest Lino Maga lived to see; he died in early 2022 after a life devoted to Barbacarlo, the hill above Broni that his family has owned since the 19th century and whose name, "Uncle Carlo" in dialect, he defended in a long court case that he won. Today the estate is in the hands of his son Giuseppe.
The vineyard is a very steep south-west-facing amphitheatre on tufaceous soils, with old Croatina, Uva Rara and Ughetta vines, Ughetta being the old local name for Vespolina. Nothing has changed in the cellar: spontaneous fermentation, ageing in old 10-15 hectolitre Slavonian casks, spring bottling without filtration.
In the glass it is a young, forthright Barbacarlo: cherry, plum, berries, spice and herbs, tense acidity and earthy tannins. It can be enjoyed now with charcuterie and traditional Lombard meat dishes, but it has everything it needs to evolve for many years in the cellar.
