For decades Guido Rivella was Angelo Gaja's winemaker, one of the people behind the most famous Barbarescos in the world. In recent years he has also been making wine under his own name at his small family estate in Barbaresco: a few hectares and very few bottles, with his daughter Silvia at his side.
Montestefano is one of the most important crus of the Barbaresco village, facing fully south on clay and marl that hold water and give structured wines. Rivella farms less than half a hectare of it. In the cellar he works with a light touch, with about three weeks of maceration and ageing in used barriques, never new, so the oak does not mask the fruit.
2019 is a classic Langhe vintage, fresh and balanced, with fragrant, tense Nebbiolo. In the glass, rose, cherry, small red berries, spice and a touch of liquorice, with fine tannins and lively acidity. A rarity for those who know the history of Barbaresco, worth waiting a few years for. With tajarin in meat sauce, braised beef or aged cheeses.
