Barbaresco Valeirano 2017 – La Spinetta

La Spinetta, the Rivetti family winery based at Castagnole delle Lanze, is one of the estates that shaped modern Piedmont, also known for the Dürer-inspired rhinoceros label on its single-vineyard Barbarescos. Valeirano, in Treiso, was first made with the 1997 vintage.

The vines average over fifty years of age and grow on calcareous clay marl of marine origin with a sandy component. After about two weeks' maceration the wine goes through malolactic and ages in French oak, only partly new, before resting in bottle.

2017, a hot, dry vintage, produced a ripe, enveloping Barbaresco, to which Treiso adds finesse: cherry, raspberry, violet, sweet spice and liquorice, with soft but firm tannins. A modern, precise cru, to pair with red meat, mushroom risotto or aged cheeses.
