Margherita Otto is a small Monforte d'Alba winery founded by Alan Manley, an American who learned his craft working for several important Langhe producers before starting his own project. The name honours his grandparents. The first Barolo vintage was 2015, and the bottles are few and much sought after.
The Barolo is a blend of small parcels in several villages, including Monforte (bordering Ginestra), Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga, with vines up to 75 years old. The style is openly traditional: a long submerged-cap maceration of about five weeks and more than three years' ageing in a single large Slavonian oak cask.
2019 is a classic, fresh vintage in the Langhe. In the glass: rose, cherry, blood orange, liquorice and spice, with dense tannins and great energy. An old-school Barolo, made the way it used to be by blending several vineyards, for braised meats, truffles and aged cheeses.
