Poderi Aldo Conterno is one of the great names of Monforte d'Alba. Aldo Conterno, son of the historic Barolo family, founded his estate in Bussia in 1969, and today the winery is run by his descendants. Among the house crus, alongside Romirasco and Cicala, Colonnello is often described as the most elegant and perfumed.
The grapes come from the Colonnello vineyard in Bussia, with vines around 40-45 years old of the Michet and Lampia Nebbiolo biotypes. Harvest is by hand in mid-October, with bunch selection in the vineyard. The must macerates on the skins for about 30 days in steel tanks; the wine then ages for around 28 months in large Slavonian oak casks, with no barriques: the wood frames the wine without masking the grape.
2014 was a cool, rainy and difficult vintage that, in the best hands, gave leaner and more fragrant Barolo than usual. More than ten years on it shows rose, red fruit, spice and the first tertiary notes, with the firm tannins typical of Monforte. With braised meats, game and aged cheeses.
