The Burlotto family has been making wine in Verduno since the early twentieth century, when Andrea Burlotto began taking his Barolo beyond Piedmont. Gian Carlo Burlotto has run the cellar since the 1970s, and since 2013 he has owned the estate together with his son Gianluca, later joined by his daughter Claudia. The name comes from Massara, the Verduno cru at the heart of the estate.
Verduno is the northernmost commune of Barolo: its wines are generally more perfumed and finely spiced than those of Serralunga or Monforte, with gentler tannins. The Nebbiolo undergoes the long wood ageing required by the appellation rules before bottling.
2016 is regarded as one of the great classic Barolo vintages, fresh and even, producing balanced, long-lived wines. In the glass: cherry, rose, violet, spice and forest floor, with dense but fine tannins and a long finish. Good value for a Barolo from this vintage. With braised beef, tajarin with truffle and aged cheeses.
