One of the Barolos most sought after by collectors, G.B. Burlotto's Monvigliero comes from Verduno's most famous cru: a south-west facing slope that gives fragrant, fine, almost ethereal Nebbiolo. The winery, led by Fabio Alessandria, makes it in a deliberately old-fashioned way: whole clusters, foot-crushing, long macerations and ageing in large casks.
The result is a Barolo built on elegance rather than power, and Monvigliero now trades at prices usually reserved for great Burgundy. 2016 is one of the most celebrated Langhe vintages in decades: an even season, slow ripening and superb balance between fruit, acidity and tannin.
In the glass: rose, cherry, spice, herbs and a fine, very long tannic weave. It can age for decades; pair it with braised meats, truffle or cave-aged cheeses.
