Elio Sandri has been making Barolo at Cascina Disa, in Perno di Monforte d'Alba, since 1981, on a property bought by his father Giovanni in 1965. Few bottles and no concessions to fashion: his wines are among the most prized by anyone looking for Barolo in its most classic, handcrafted form.
The Nebbiolo vineyards, facing south and east, are farmed with minimal intervention. In the cellar fermentations are spontaneous in concrete and ageing takes place in large Slavonian oak casks, without fining or filtration; for the Riserva, the time in wood stretches by several years.
2016 is one of the great classic Langhe vintages, cool and even, producing Barolos of exemplary balance and longevity. Here you find cherry, raspberry, rose, liquorice and spice, with dense tannins and vibrant acidity. Enjoyable now, with a long future ahead; ideal with beef braised in Barolo, game and truffles.
