Colonia 2013 – Fèlsina

Colonia is the summit of Fèlsina's range, the Castelnuovo Berardenga estate that, with Giuseppe Mazzocolin and winemaker Franco Bernabei, made Sangiovese history in the south of Chianti Classico. The vineyard sits at the top of Poggio a Rancia and takes its name from a sun-therapy colony that once stood on the spot.

It is pure Sangiovese from a vineyard planted in the 1990s on reddish-brown soils rich in iron and magnesium, over alberese limestone and calcareous marl. After a long maceration in stainless steel it ages for over two years in new French oak barriques, then in bottle; only a few thousand numbered bottles are made.

2013, a cool and classic vintage, produced a taut, deep Sangiovese that is now entering its best phase: cherry, dried violet, tobacco, leather, spice and dense yet polished tannins. One of Tuscany's great Sangioveses, alongside the finest Brunellos; with bistecca alla fiorentina, game or aged pecorino.
