Since 1977 I Sodi di San Niccolò has been the top wine of Castellare di Castellina, Paolo Panerai's Chianti Classico estate, and it was one of the first Super Tuscans made from native grapes. The name combines the "sodi", hard, steep plots that oxen could not plough, with San Niccolò, the 14th-century chapel surrounded by the best vineyards. As on all the house's wines, the label shows a small bird, a symbol of environmentally minded farming.
It is a blend of Sangioveto and Malvasia Nera from vineyards at 350 to 400 metres on stony soils. Ageing lasts about two years in barriques, partly new, followed by a period in bottle.
2019 is one of the best recent vintages in Tuscany, with healthy, well-ripened grapes. The result is a full, harmonious Sodi: ripe cherry, plum, spice, tobacco and leather, silky tannins and a long finish. Great ageing potential; with game, slow-braised beef or aged cheeses.
At a glance: Sangioveto 85%, Malvasia nera 15% · 14% ABV · 0.75 l · Castellare di Castellina, Castellina in Chianti (SI)
