Montebuono is the second cru of Lino Maga, the Broni grower whose Barbacarlo made him a cult figure of the Oltrepò Pavese, loved in Italy and above all in Japan. A producer who never fitted any mould, he chose to step out of the DOC and let vineyards and vintages do the talking.
It comes from the vineyard of the same name at Broni, on tuff and sandy soils, from a traditional Oltrepò blend of Croatina, Uva Rara and Vespolina. Spontaneous fermentation in wood, no corrections, a few months in the same casks and then bottle. Every vintage is a story of its own: sometimes the wine is still and dry, sometimes it keeps a touch of residual sugar and a faint prickle.
2022, a hot and dry vintage across Northern Italy, gave ripe grapes and a wine with good substance: red and black fruit, cherry, spicy notes and a juicy palate, with the noble rusticity typical of Maga's wines. Drink it with pasta with meat sauce, Oltrepò salumi, grilled meats and medium-aged cheeses, or forget it in the cellar for a few years.
