Brancaia was born in 1981, when the Swiss Widmer family bought the estate in Radda in Chianti; today it is led by Barbara Widmer and has vineyards in Radda, Castellina and the Maremma, near Grosseto, all farmed organically. N°2 is the pure Cabernet Sauvignon from the Maremma estate: a modern, precise red that is enjoyable from its youth.
The vines lie at 75-175 metres, facing west and south-west, about ten kilometres from the sea, in a Mediterranean climate with marked day-night temperature swings. After fermentation in steel the wine matures for 12 months in oak, a measured influence that leaves room for the fruit.
The 2023 is deep ruby, with a fresh, cool-toned Cabernet profile: blackberry, blueberry, blackcurrant, cedar, graphite, bay leaf and juniper. The palate is medium to full-bodied and juicy, with fine-grained tannins, lively acidity and a long, savoury, mineral finish. With lamb chops, grilled meat, mushroom dishes, osso buco with polenta and aged pecorino.
