Brancaia was born in 1981, when Swiss couple Brigitte and Bruno Widmer bought an abandoned farm in Castellina in Chianti; just two years later their wines stood out at a Chianti Classico tasting, and today the company has three estates: Brancaia in Castellina, Poppi in Radda in Chianti and Brancaia in Maremma, near Grosseto. Tre (N°3) is the red that brings all three together, and the most versatile wine in the range.
The blend is 80% Sangiovese with 10% each of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Picked at ripeness in the three areas, the grapes are vinified separately in temperature-controlled stainless steel; the wine then matures for 12 months, two thirds in 500-litre French oak tonneaux and one third in concrete vats, followed by at least two months in bottle.
Bright ruby red, it offers aromas of cherry, raspberry and light spice; the palate is fresh and juicy, with balanced tannins and good length. Ideal with pasta with meat ragù, roast white meats, cured meats and even grilled fish. The Magnum format makes it perfect for big tables and celebrations: in the larger bottle the wine evolves more slowly and keeps its freshness for longer.
