Solaia 1999 – Antinori

Solaia is, with Tignanello, the flagship of the modern Tuscan renaissance led by Antinori. It comes from the vineyard of the same name on the Tignanello estate in Chianti Classico, named for its full exposure to the sun. The first vintage was 1978; from 1980 Sangiovese joined the Cabernet, setting the style we know today.

The vineyard sits on stony limestone soils of alberese and galestro. The grapes are vinified by parcel and the wine matures in new French oak barriques for about a year and a half, followed by further ageing in bottle.

1999 was a very good, balanced and classic vintage in Tuscany. After more than twenty-five years Solaia is a mature, complex wine: evolved black fruit, leather, tobacco, spice, undergrowth and balsamic notes, with silky tannins. One of Italy's great Bordeaux-style reds, alongside Sassicaia and Ornellaia. With game, roasts and aged cheeses.
