San Giusto a Rentennano stands at Gaiole in Chianti, at the southernmost edge of Chianti Classico, on the remains of a Cistercian monastery later turned into a fortress. It has belonged to the Martini di Cigala family since 1914, today run by three siblings, and the vineyards are farmed organically.
Percarlo is the estate's pure Sangiovese and one of the great single-variety Sangiovese Super Tuscans. It comes from a strict selection at harvest, ferments spontaneously with long macerations and matures for about 20-22 months in French oak barriques, followed by long bottle ageing. Soils of galestro, sandstone and marly limestone give structure and depth.
The 2020 combines richness and tension: ripe cherry, pomegranate, black tea, spice and graphite, with dense tannins and a mineral finish. A wine for the cellar: open it now with a good decanting or forget it for a few years. With braised meats, game, steak and aged cheeses.
At a glance: Sangiovese 100% · 14.5% ABV · 0.75 l · San Giusto a Rentennano, Gaiole in Chianti
