Ornellaia is, alongside Sassicaia, the name that made Bolgheri famous worldwide. The estate was founded by Lodovico Antinori in the early 1980s and the first vintage was 1985: 2010 is therefore the twenty-fifth harvest, celebrated with this special edition presented in a gift box.
It is a Bordeaux blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, from vineyards on varied soils between the hills and the coastal plain. Each parcel is vinified separately, then the wine matures for around eighteen months in French oak barriques, largely new, and is further aged in bottle before release.
2010, a cool vintage with slow ripening, produced an Ornellaia of great elegance and tension. Today it is at its best: cassis, blackberry, tobacco, cedar, graphite and spice, with fine tannins and still excellent freshness. One of Italy's great Bordeaux-style reds, to set beside Sassicaia and Solaia. With roasts, game and aged cheeses.
