Riecine is a small estate at Gaiole in Chianti founded in 1971 by Englishman John Dunkley and Palmina Abbagnano, among the first to believe in a Sangiovese of finesse in the heart of Chianti Classico. Riecine di Riecine comes from the estate's oldest vineyards, the ones the founders found on their arrival; the first vintage was 2010.
It is pure Sangiovese from decades-old vines at 450 to 500 metres, on calcareous and clay soils farmed organically. Its long maturation now takes place in unglazed concrete eggs, with no new wood, leaving all the room to fruit and terroir.
2013, a cool and classic vintage in Chianti, gave taut, elegant wines: after more than ten years one can expect a mature Sangiovese, with cherry, blood orange, dried herbs, tobacco and fine tannins backed by good acidity. With roasts, pigeon, mushrooms and aged cheeses.
