Speri is one of the historic families of Valpolicella Classica, based at Pedemonte, with several generations working together in the vineyard and cellar. Sant'Urbano is their flagship Amarone, named after Monte Sant'Urbano in Fumane, the hill the grapes come from.
The vineyard, at 280-350 metres, has fine exposure and old vines. Corvina, Corvinone, Rondinella and a little Molinara are dried for about a hundred days, losing a good part of their weight. After fermentation in steel the wine ages at length: first in French oak tonneaux, then in Slavonian casks, and finally for a year in bottle. A classic style that aims for balance rather than sweetness.
2018 gave a full-bodied Amarone that never tires: cherries in spirit, plum, cocoa, spice and a balsamic streak, with soft tannins and a long finish. With braised meats, game, aged cheeses or on its own after dinner.
At a glance: Corvina & Corvinone 70%, Rondinella 25%, Molinara 5% · 15% ABV · 0.75 l · Speri, Valpolicella Classica
