Barbacarlo is a legendary wine of the Oltrepò Pavese, made by the Maga family at Broni from a single vineyard they have owned since the late 19th century. The name recalls uncle Carlo, barba Carlo in dialect, who divided the property among his relatives. For decades Lino Maga defended his exclusive right to the name, including in court.
The vineyard climbs the Broni hill to about 300 metres, with very steep slopes and tufaceous soils, and gets sun all day. Croatina, Uva Rara and Vespolina (known here as Ughetta) are vinified together in an artisanal way in old casks; the wine is racked several times and bottled in spring without heavy filtration, so a deposit is normal.
2018 was a generous vintage, and the Barbacarlo is powerful: ripe black fruit, cherry, spice and earthy notes, with a light natural liveliness. An unconventional red for the cellar, for cured meats, cotechino, braised dishes and aged cheeses.
