Col d'Orcia, owned by the Marone Cinzano family, is one of Montalcino's historic estates, on the south-western slope towards Sant'Angelo in Colle and the Orcia river. Poggio al Vento is its single-vineyard Riserva, made only in the best vintages: the vineyard was planted in 1974 by Count Alberto Marone Cinzano on a windy, south-facing hill at around 300 metres.
Ageing is very long and traditional: three years in Slavonian and Allier oak casks of 25 and 75 hectolitres, then two and a half to three years in bottle. The wine is released around seven years after the harvest.
2013 is a cool, classic vintage with a late harvest that produced elegant, taut Brunellos of great finesse. In the glass: cherry, berries, dried rose, tobacco and spice, with fine tannins and a long finish. A Riserva of the classic school, perfect with roasts, game and aged cheeses.
