Avignonesi is one of the benchmark estates of Montepulciano: established in 1974, since 2009 it has been led by Virginie Saverys, who converted all the vineyards, between Montepulciano and Cortona, to organic and biodynamic farming. Alongside the Vino Nobile and the famous Vin Santo, Grifi is the house Super Tuscan, a red that combines the character of Sangiovese with the structure of Cabernet.
The Sangiovese comes from the Montepulciano vineyards, the Cabernet Sauvignon from those in Cortona and Montepulciano. In 2022 the blend is roughly 62% Cabernet Sauvignon and 38% Sangiovese; the wine then matures for about 18 months in oak barriques and tonneaux.
Dark ruby with violet highlights, it opens on blueberry, blackberry and incense, then graphite and vanilla. The palate is dense, broad and complex, with plum and blueberry and a balsamic, spicy finish carried by good acidity and fine, polished tannins. With red meat, roasts, game and aged cheeses. The magnum format slows its evolution and makes it ideal for large tables and special occasions.
